This site is meant to be a source of information for those who served aboard the

USS L. Y. Spear and their families.  We feel it is very important to have as much input from those who were involved with the ship and to have that information posted on this site.

If you have any information about the Spear or her crew, or would like to submit photos or other memorabilia, please contact the webmaster.

We will post all pertinent information as soon as possible.

News & Events

We're going back to our roots!

Our next reunion will be held in the Tidewater area in 2010, which is the 40th anniversary of the L. Y. SPEAR's commissioning.  Dates and details are still being worked out and will be posted as soon as they're available.  We hope to see you there!

2008 USS L. Y. SPEAR Reunion!

Our 2008 reunion is officially "in the books" and what a GREAT time we had in Washington, DC!  New friendships were made and old ones rekindled as we laughed and shared stories of our time onboard.  If you weren't able to make our reunion this year, you missed two special presentations to former Commanding Officers Jay Cohen and Ralph Ghormley, you don't know "the sign", and you didn't see who set the alarm off at Mount Vernon!  To see some pictures from our reunion, click here.

Status of the SPEAR

On September 21, 2007, the SPEAR's status on the Naval Vessel Register (NVR) changed from "Stricken, to be disposed of by scrapping" to "Stricken, to be disposed of."  Have they changed their minds about scrapping our ship?  We'll dig deeper into this mystery and post our findings here!
