I first met Mike Wiener in Norfolk, Va where we were both assigned as brig chasers while waiting transportation to USS L Y Spear. After a week in Norfolk, we were sent to Treasure Island, Ca for two more weeks checking ID's at the mess hall. Finally we got our flight to Hawaii, Guam, P.I, and on to Diego Garcia where we met the ship. Mike went into R-1A as a welder, and I went into the R-1B Dive Locker. When the ship returned to Norfolk, Mike and I and John Fletcher (also from R-1a) got a three room apartment off base. That is where Mike met his future bride Melody Koehn who lived in the same apartment complex. When I had shoulder surgery, Mike was instrumental in motivating me to push the therapy until I could once again throw a baseball or frisbee and regained full range of motion and strength in that arm so I could return to diving. After Mike got out of the Navy, he and Melody were married and they moved to Brush, Colorado where he worked for Morgan Community College. He enjoyed collecting and rebuilding John Deere tractors, and hunting for deer and antelope.
